Nomi is the only app in this test where I stopped being surprised when it brought something up on its own. It builds what looks like structured notes behind the scenes rather than just leaning on a longer context window, so the fake injury I mentioned once showed up as a real follow-up question eleven days later. Chat writing is a notch below the top visual apps, and there is no strong image side, but if recall is the point, nothing else here is close.
Verdict: the memory pick, no real competition.
2. Selira AI, strong recall on a free tier
Selira held two of my three planted details after a week, the pet name and the work problem, and brought the work one back unprompted rather than only when I fished for it. It is not quite at Nomi’s level on the exact date, but for an app you can use free it recalls more than most paid ones here, and it stays in character while it does it, so the memory reads as the same person continuing rather than a fact lookup. That combination puts it at a 9.5/10 for me.
Verdict: the best recall you can get without paying, and it stays in character while doing it.
3. Kindroid, close behind with voice attached
Kindroid held two of my three planted details after two weeks, missing only the specific date. What sets it apart is that the memory is tunable, you can nudge what it treats as important, which most apps do not expose at all. Voice is genuinely good too. Pricing climbs once you use voice and selfies regularly, so budget for that rather than the entry number.
Verdict: strong second, worth it if you also want voice.
4. EVA AI, decent recall buried under upsells
EVA remembered the pet name and the work problem but missed the date entirely, and even the two it kept came back generic rather than specific. The bigger issue is the monetization. Photo and video generation sit on a separate token balance stacked on top of the subscription, which makes the app feel more expensive than the headline price once you actually use it.
Verdict: the memory works, the wallet takes the hit.

More apps I tested for recall
- CrushOn AI keeps a scene consistent while you are in it but does not carry specific facts forward well across sessions days apart.
- Dream Companion holds the character you built, its traits and backstory, but does not layer new long-term memory on top of that foundation.
- JOI AI treats memory as an afterthought to the voice feature, which is fine if voice is why you are there in the first place.
- Character AI, mapped here to Secrets AI as the closer alternative, is the most popular app in the category and one of the weakest on memory. It forgot all three of my planted details inside a single week, which is a real gap given how much people use it daily.
A quick note on how memory actually gets built
Most apps that claim “memory” are just running a bigger context window, which is not the same thing as a companion that recalls something from three weeks ago on its own. The real signal is whether it brings something up unprompted, not whether it answers correctly when you directly ask “do you remember X.” Test it that way yourself before you trust a marketing page.
