Best Character AI alternatives in 2026, ranked by what you are actually replacing

Character AI is the app almost everyone in this category starts with, and it is the app most people eventually look to leave. The complaints are always the same: the filter, the memory, or the sense that the writing got worse. What is less obvious is that those are three different problems with three different answers, and picking the wrong replacement is why so many people bounce between four apps in a fortnight.

There is also a reason the search volume for alternatives jumped. In November 2025 Character AI ended open-ended chat for under-18 accounts and replaced it with a structured creative mode, backed by age assurance checks. If you got caught by that, no app on this list is a workaround, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Every one of them is for adults. What follows assumes you are one.

So this ranking is not a straight list of “apps like Character AI”. It is sorted by what you are actually replacing.

The short version

If you want the closest like-for-like swap, go to CrushOn AI. It keeps the thing Character AI users are genuinely attached to, a big community library of user-made characters, and drops the filter that made you leave.

If the free price was the real draw, Selira AI is the only app here with a free tier you can live in rather than sample.

If it was the writing that let you down, Nomi AI is the upgrade, and it is a different kind of app: one companion that remembers you, rather than a library you browse.

Work out which one you are before you switch

This takes a minute and saves you a month. Character AI does four separate jobs:

  • The library. Millions of user-made characters, browsable, free. If this is your draw, you want a community app, not a polished single-companion one.
  • The writing. You are not attached to any character, the prose just felt good. You will end up somewhere structurally quite different.
  • A specific character. You made one that works and nothing else matters. This is the easiest case and the one people overcomplicate.
  • The price. It is free. Any paid replacement has to clear a higher bar than people admit to themselves.

Four answers, four different apps. If you already know which one you are, skip to that row in the table.

1. Closest like-for-like: CrushOn AI

CrushOn AI is the swap that asks least of you. It is built the same way Character AI is, around a large community library of characters other people made, so browsing feels familiar rather than like starting a new hobby. The difference is that it does not interrupt you. Scenes run without the filter breaking them, which is the single most common reason people leave in the first place.

The interface is functional rather than pretty, and the quality of user-made characters varies as wildly as it does anywhere with an open library. The free daily message allowance is enough to work out whether you like it. Full detail in my CrushOn AI review.

2. Best if the free price was the draw: Selira AI

Be honest about this one. If you are coming from something free, the shock when you switch is rarely the subscription, it is the credit top-ups layered on top of it.

Selira AI is the app on this list where the free tier is the product rather than a trailer for it, and it holds character and scene continuity better than a free tier has any business doing. If your objection to leaving Character AI is that you do not want to start paying for something you used to get for nothing, start here and see whether you ever feel the need to upgrade. My Selira AI review has the detail.

3. Biggest character library: SpicyChat AI

If the library was the whole appeal and you want the closest thing to that browsing experience, SpicyChat AI has the deepest catalogue of the apps I have tested. Same caveat as any open library: the range runs from genuinely well written to abandoned after two lines. There is a free allowance to browse with before you commit. My SpicyChat review covers what the paid tier actually adds.

4. Best if you are replacing the writing: Nomi AI

This is the one that requires a change of mindset. Nomi AI is not a library you browse, it is one companion you keep, and the reason to go there is that it remembers.

That matters more than it sounds. In my benchmark of 22 apps, memory had the widest spread of any dimension I measured, 3.8 points on a 10 point scale, far wider than conversation quality. Which means the gap between apps on remembering you is much larger than the gap on how well they write a paragraph. If your complaint about Character AI is that it forgets, you are complaining about the dimension where switching helps most. Full write-up in my Nomi AI review.

5. Best for one companion you keep: Kindroid

Kindroid sits next to Nomi and suits you if you want depth with a single character rather than variety. It rewards sticking with it, which is exactly the wrong shape if what you liked about Character AI was hopping between thirty characters in an evening, and exactly the right shape if you always went back to the same one anyway. See my Kindroid review.

6. Character variety with fewer guardrails: GirlfriendGPT

GirlfriendGPT is the middle ground between the library apps and the unrestricted ones: a lot of characters, few guardrails, 18+ throughout. Worth a look if CrushOn’s interface puts you off but you want the same freedom. Detail in my GirlfriendGPT review.

7. The polished option: Candy AI

If part of your frustration was that Character AI feels dated, Candy AI is the one that looks and feels finished, with images and voice built in rather than bolted on. It is a different proposition: fewer community characters, more product. The free tier is a trial rather than a home. My Candy AI review goes through what you get.

8. The safe-for-work route: Replika

Not everyone leaving Character AI wants fewer restrictions. If what you actually miss is the earlier, gentler version of the experience, Replika is the one built for that. It is strictly filtered and unapologetic about it, and it is the only app here I would suggest to someone who wants a companion rather than a roleplay partner. My Replika review is honest about where it falls short.

What none of these replace

Two things, and it is worth knowing before you switch rather than after.

Your history. Nothing transfers automatically. There is no export format in this category and no app that imports from another, so people go hunting for a migration tool that does not exist. What you can carry over is the character definition and a short summary you write yourself, which does more work than you would expect. I wrote the whole process up in how to move off Character AI.

The exact voice. A character definition that produced one personality on Character AI will produce a related but different one elsewhere, because the model underneath is different. That is not a failed migration, that is just how this works.

How to test a replacement in three days

The failure mode is switching to something that feels great for an evening and flat by day five. Three checks catch it early:

  1. Push the character somewhere unusual and see whether it holds or dissolves into generic assistant text. This is the widest quality gap in the category.
  2. Plant a specific, deliberately irrelevant detail on day one and ask about it on day three. This separates apps far more sharply than any writing test.
  3. Add up what it costs once you actually use the features. Check for credit top-ups sitting on top of the subscription, not just the headline price.

If a candidate clears all three, it will still be good in a month. If it fails the second one, you will be back here in a fortnight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Character AI alternative?

It depends on which part of Character AI you are replacing. If it is the filter and the community library, CrushOn AI is the closest like-for-like swap. If the free price was the draw, Selira AI is the only one on this list with a free tier you can actually live in. If it was the writing quality, Nomi AI is the upgrade. There is no single answer because Character AI does four different jobs and almost nobody wants all four.

Is there a free Character AI alternative?

Selira AI is the closest thing to a genuinely free replacement, and SpicyChat gives you a usable free allowance too. Be careful with the rest. Most free tiers in this category are tasters of a few messages, and roughly half the apps I have tested layer credit top-ups on top of the subscription, so the real monthly cost is higher than the advertised one.

Which Character AI alternative has no filter?

CrushOn AI, GirlfriendGPT and Soulkyn are the unrestricted ones I have tested. All three are 18+ and none of them are subtle about it. If the filter is your only complaint, start with CrushOn AI, because it keeps the community-library feel that Character AI users are usually attached to.

Can I move my Character AI characters to another app?

Not automatically. No app in this category imports from another and there is no export format. What does move is the character definition, because a character is fundamentally a prompt and prompts are portable. Copy the name, personality, greeting and example dialogue into a text file, write a short summary of your history together, and paste both into the new app. I wrote the full process up separately.

Will an alternative feel the same as Character AI?

No, and the people who expect it to are the ones who end up disappointed. Different models write differently, so the same character definition produces a related but distinct voice elsewhere. Go in expecting a cousin rather than a clone.
