I tried Selira AI mostly to test a claim I did not believe. “Unlimited free chat” usually means unlimited until Tuesday, at which point a meter appears. Here is what I found after actually living in it rather than clicking around the landing page.
What Selira AI is
Selira is a companion app built around a free tier that is not a trial. You can create your own characters, browse ones the community has made, and chat without a message counter anywhere on screen. Styles run from anime to realistic, and the paid layer is almost entirely about image generation rather than about unlocking the conversation. It sits alongside the other apps in my main ranking, but with a pricing model that works backwards from how the rest of the category does it.
First impressions
Signup is short and you are talking within a minute or two. The character library is the first thing that lands: there is a lot of it, spanning cartoon-styled anime through to photoreal, and you can start from someone else’s character rather than facing a blank builder. For anyone who has bounced off an app because the creation screen asked twenty questions before letting them speak, that matters more than it sounds.
The interface is clean without being sparse. Nothing about it screams that a paywall is coming, which after a few dozen of these apps is genuinely disorienting.
Conversation quality
Good, and consistent, which is the harder of the two. It holds a personality across a long session without sliding into the eager agreeableness that ruins a lot of these apps by message forty. The creation options cover appearance, personality and the way they speak, and the app respects what you set rather than quietly reverting to a house style after a few exchanges. Unlimited companions on the free plan means there is no reason to be precious about it: make five, keep the one that works.
How it compares
The comparison that matters is on price rather than features. Most of this category asks for around $20 a month before you get anything meaningful, with a free tier that exists to show you what you are missing. Selira’s free tier is the product, and its entry paid plan is $5.99. Against something like Candy AI, Selira loses on visual polish and wins on cost by a distance that is hard to argue with.
Against the conversation-first apps it is closer than the price gap suggests. It will not out-write the best of them, but it is in the same conversation, which at zero is a strange sentence to have to write.
Memory
The free plan gives what the app calls basic chat memory, and the paid plans add long-term memory and, higher up, enhanced retention. That tiering is honest, and it shows: on the free plan it holds context well inside a conversation but does not carry as much between sessions. Pay the $5.99 and it starts remembering across days properly.
If long-term memory is your priority, treat the paid tier as the real starting point rather than an upsell. It is still cheaper than most competitors’ entry plans.
Pricing
This is where it separates itself, so the detail is worth having.
The free plan gives unlimited messaging, unlimited companions, unlimited memories, no ads and basic chat memory. It does not give image generation at all. Light at $5.99 a month adds long-term memory and five NSFW images per hour in anime and realistic styles. Basic at $9.99 raises that to ten per hour with enhanced memory retention. Premium at $19.99 adds priority response times, twenty images per hour and access to special companions. There are also one-off image packs of 50, 100 or 250 credits if you want pictures without a subscription.
The honest read: the chat is free forever and the images are what you are buying. Note the shape of that limit too. Images are metered per hour, not per month, so you cannot burn a monthly allowance in one evening, but you also cannot generate forty in a row.
Privacy
Around average for the category, which means fine rather than reassuring. Use an email that is not tied to your name, keep identifying details out of the chat, and read the current policy before you subscribe. I write that in every review because almost nobody does it. Who Selira AI is for
If you mainly want to talk, this is close to a default recommendation. The free tier is not a sample, it is the thing, and the paid tiers are priced like an upgrade rather than a toll.
If images are the point for you, go in with your eyes open. You are paying from $5.99, and even then you are working within an hourly rate rather than generating freely. That is a fair trade at the price, but it is a different app than the one the “unlimited” headline might have you picturing.
